The British weather was kind enough on Wednesday 12th June to allow the Oxford MCCU girls to have a rain-free T20 match against the Army in the Parks. Confident after our recent string of wins, and with the addition of Sophie Taylor back from her adventures in New Zealand, we were ready for a good contest against the Army.
Oxford lost the toss and were sent in to bat first. Captain Vanessa Picker and fellow opener Livy Lee-Smith put in some quick runs before Lee-Smith was dismissed in the seventh over. Sophie Taylor then joined the skipper at the crease and the two put in a solid partnership, before some perhaps overconfident running saw Taylor being run out for 21.
What followed could only be described as a mid-order collapse, with no other batter getting into double figures. An extremely respectable 38 by Picker, however, meant that the Army would be chasing a defendable 100 runs.
Amy Hearn and Alice Hart opened the bowling for Oxford. A wicket in the third over brought some confidence to the home side; however, the combination of solid partnerships between the Army ladies and loose bowling on behalf of the Oxford side, meant that the Army were able to chase down the target and win in the 19th over.
This was probably the closest match that Oxford had played so far this season. Although the loss was frustrating, this friendly provided good practice for the upcoming BUCS matches and the 50-over varsity match.
Summary of scores:
Oxford 6/99 (20 overs)
Army 4/100 (19)
Sachdeva 2/13 (4)
Hart 1/26 (4)
McNab 0/1 (0.2)
