Following a highly successful Blues season, several Oxford players were selected for the 2019 Sir Paul Getty’s XI team. As part of the new Sir Paul Getty Cricket Legacy Program (funded by Mark Getty, the family and two supports of Wormsley Cricket’), two matches were held at Wormsley Estate in July 2019.
OUCC Women’s Blues captain Vanessa Picker was selected to captain the Sir Paul Getty’s XI side for both matches. On Wednesday 24th July, the following Blues played for the Getty XI (against MCC): Vanessa Picker; Elodie Harbourne; Amy Hearn; Maia Bouchier; Sophie Taylor. On Thursday 25th July, the following Blues played for the Getty XI: Vanessa Picker; Elodie Harbourne; Amy Hearn; Sophie Taylor; Sam Bennett.
Both matches provided an invaluable learning opportunity for the Oxford players. The Wednesday match against MCC was a very close encounter, with the Getty XI losing by only 8 runs. Harbourne picked up a wicket, while Hearn and Bouchier proved to be very economical in the opening overs. Vanessa Picker opened the batting, scoring 45.
The Thursday match against the the International Fairbreak XI was one to remember, as the FairBreak team consisted of players from 10 countries, including 6 international captains. The Fairbreak XI won the match convincingly, although there were some strong Oxford performances, with Harbourne picking up another wicket and Picker contributing more runs at the top of the order.
Overall, these were very memorable fixtures to play in and we hope to be able to participate in the Getty’s XI fixtures in the seasons ahead.
