Cricket at the cinema!

Two cricket film releases this week with exclusive Oxford screenings! From the Ashes on Tuesday and Fire in Babylon on Thursday

Tuesday 10th May
"From the Ashes"
Odeon St.George's Street

On Tuesday May 10th for ONE NIGHT ONLY with a satellite-linked Q&A to follow the film with Sir Ian Botham and Bob Willis.

The film, called FROM THE ASHES, celebrates the 30th anniversary of Botham's Ashes - and the incredible events of that summer that saw the greatest turnaround in sporting history as England overcame odds of 500-1, Botham's career was resurrected and the country united around cricket. Featuring in-depth interviews with Botham, Willis, Mike Brearley, Kim Hughes, Rod Marsh and comment from Gideon Haigh and Vic Marks the film attempts to recreate that wonderful summer and also look at the role of captaincy in cricket.

"Totally engrossing -- it's as if you were actually there." David Edwards, Daily Mirror
"A brilliant re-creation of the summer of 1981... Just occasionally, sport can claim to be of historic significance. This was one such moment." Stephen Moss, Guardian

Tickets for this unique film and Q&A event can be purchased via http://www.fromtheashesthefilm.com/ or the cinema website or box office - but it's only on for one night - TUESDAY 10th MAY.

Thursday 12th May, 20:35pm
"FIRE IN BABYLON"
Phoenix Picturehouse, 57 Walton Street, Oxford, OX2 6AE

Plus satellite Q&A with Sir Viv Richards, director Stevan Riley and producers John Battsek and Charles Steel

In a turbulent era of apartheid in South Africa, race-riots in England and civil unrest in the Caribbean, the West Indian cricketers of the late ‘70s and ‘80s struck a wonderfully defiant blow at the forces of white prejudice worldwide.

With Caribbean flair, a fearless spirit and a thumping reggae beat, they hijacked the genteel game of the privileged elite and replayed it on their own terms. By dominating at the highest level - for longer than any other team in the history of sport - their symbolic declaration was clear: they will not be dictated to, on a cricket ground or in any other context. FIRE IN BABYLON boasts dynamic archive footage, classic music by the likes of Bob Marley and the Wailers, Gregory Issacs and Burning Spear, and is a story that celebrates the equalising power of sport.
